Estimates show more than 35 million individuals with disabilities nationwide are eligible to vote, including 315,000 in Iowa. Only 16 million voted in the 2016 elections.
The Iowa Developmental and Disabilities Council public policy manager, Rik Shannon, points out it is often lack of information about the candidates or the election process that causes people with disabilities not to vote.
The REV UP Campaign is a nonpartisan initiative of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) that aims to increase the political power of people with disabilities while also engaging candidates and the media on disability rights issues.
